2002 - Disastrous year for Pakistan
hockey
The worst sufferer being the
country's national game. The performance of the hockey team has brought
humiliation to the country. For the first time in the country's history,
Pakistan failed to win any medal at the Asian Games. Though the PHF is
headed by Gen Aziz, Chief of the Joint Staff, unfortunately he has failed to
take notice of the poor performance of the hockey team. Very few important
events in Hockey, took place in the year 2002. Some of them are:
Revival of Pak-India Hockey Series
Lahore November
11: The Indian Government agreed to play the hockey series
with Pakistan at a neutral venue. The both boards have decided
to play a three match series in Singapore in February next
year.
The Secretary, Pakistan Hockey Federation, Brig.
Musarrat Ullah Khan while talking to the newsmen at National
Hockey Stadium here on Monday, disclosed this.
“The
president of the Indian Hockey Federation, K. P. S. Gill
called me after getting clearance from his government and
informed me that the India is ready to play hockey series with
Pakistan at a neutral venue. He also made all the arrangements
with the Singapore Hockey Association. In reply, I agreed to
play with them in Singapore in February next year,But untill
Indian Government show some interest. As this statement is
being made only by the IHF President and we are waiting to see
the Government of India should officialy declare their
interest.” He Said.
The last series was played between
the two countries in 1999 in Delhi and Lahore. But due to the
cross border tension the sporting ties between the two rivals
were stopped and especially India refused to play Pakistan
every time, even at the neutral venues.
Unfortunately,
India faced Pakistan in Dhaka Cup final in 2001, and then two
times in Champions Trophy 2002 in Germany and in the Busan
Asian Games semi final.
The upcoming three match
series will be played after the three years period and hope
that this will continue in future for the betterment of the
game and better relationship between the two countries.

Pak thrash Bangladesh 9-0
BUSAN: Seven-time
champions Pakistan thrashed Bangladesh 9-0 to advance to the
semifinals of the Asian Games men's hockey tournament at the
Gangseo stadium in Busan on Friday.
Pakistan, who had
beaten China 8-3 in an earlier league match, joined Malaysia
in the knockout stage from Group B. India and South Korea have
already made it to the semifinals from Group B.
Penalty-corner specialist Sohail Abbas and Khalid
Salim scored twice, while Mudassar Ali, Ghazanfar Ali,
Mohammad Shabbir, Rehan Butt and Kashif Jawad grabbed one
apiece.
Pakistan toyed with the opposition from early
on, slamming six goals by half-time, even as Bangladesh failed
to make a worthwhile move. Pakistan seemed to relax a bit in
the second session, but assistant coach Asif Bajwa said it was
done deliberately.
"We wanted to put pressure on our
defence because we thought we had to improve that aspect of
our game," Bajwa said. "Our aim is to prepare for the matches
against India and South Korea." Pakistan take on Malaysia on
Sunday to decide the group toppers.
